*Celebrating A Legacy of Creativity and Dreams at the Christmas Season

The true meaning of Christmas is LIFE-GIVING.

To celebrate Christmas, we need to BE FULLY ALIVE ourselves,

and to GIVE LIFE to someone else.

I love Christmas. I was one of those blessed children that believe in Christmas magic: Santa Claus will bring you a gift if you are a good kid! Christmas brought me the warmest memories of my childhood: twinkling lights and tree decoration, aroma of the coffee, rich black forest chocolate cake, music from the LP records, colorful socks hanging by the bed, beautifully wrapped gifts, all prepared by Mother’s talented and loving hands … In those days when Taiwan was still a developing country, Christmas was still a Western idea and not commercialized locally, and daddy had to work two jobs to keep us fed and warm, Mom’s insisting on celebrating Christmas was rather untraditional and romantic. She would never have guessed that her passion for Christmas did more than filling me with a sense of sweet home, it actually built in me a deep faith that Life is Beautiful and Magical: something fantastic and beyond imagination is waiting for me. Thank you Mom, for giving me the most wonderful gift in life: the ability to Dream and the hunger to Create!  

我喜愛聖誕節。我屬於世上一群特受恩寵的小孩子之一，就是相信聖誕節的奇妙：若你是個乖小孩，聖誕老人會送你一個禮物！聖誕節曾帶給我童年最溫馨的回憶：閃爍的彩燈，聖誕樹的裝飾，咖啡的馨香，濃郁的黑森林巧克力蛋糕，唱片機傳送出的音樂，床頭懸掛的彩色襪子，包紮精美的聖誕禮物，全都是母親才華洋溢又充滿愛心的雙手所預備的。在那個台灣仍是開發中國家、聖誕節仍是個洋玩意兒也完全未商業化、父親要兼兩個工作才能供我們吃飽穿暖的年代裡，母親慶賀聖誕節的堅持有著點反傳統的浪漫。但她恐怕從來沒有想到，她對聖誕節的熱情，不只是帶給我一份家的甜美溫暖，也在我心中築下一個深深的信心，就是人生是美麗而充滿超自然力量的：奇妙而遠超乎想像的美好的人生正等著我。謝謝妳，母親，賜給我一份人生最棒的禮物：夢想的能力與創造的渴望！

Painting joyfully on a big canvas! 在巨幅的胚布上快樂地作畫！

This Christmas I am blessed to pass this heritage of “To Dream and to Create” to 180 kids from age 10 to college level through the wonderful collaboration between Wonder Mill, Hsin-Chu Champions Assoc. and Hsin-Chu Light of the City Association. Through the whole December we meet on Saturday afternoons regularly, and we paint, we tell stories, we create drama and videos, we think of new invention ideas, and we create a facebook group to broadcast to the world what we have discovered and learned! And on Christmas Eve, we will parade along the old city moat shaded by lovely willows, walked on the beautiful cobblestone pathway and around the Eastern Gate of Hsin-chu, wearing the Christmas Mascots we designed and DIYed ourselves! So if you want to taste a different kind of Christmas, please come to the plaza by the Hsin-Chu train station and watch our skits and sing Christmas songs with us!

這個聖誕季節，我有另一份恩寵，就是可以把這份「夢想與創造」的傳承分享給一百八十位從十歲到大學階段的孩子們。奇蹟磨坊在新竹得勝者與新竹城市之光關懷協會的安排下，有機會和這群孩子共度十二月每個週六的下午。我們一起畫畫，一起說故事，一起製作短劇和短片，發想新產品概念，也在臉書開創了「創意.D.大力玩」官方社團，向世界報導我們在這裡學了什麼和發現了什麼！聖誕夜下午我們將穿戴自己設計製作的聖誕公仔道具，踩著石版路，環繞新竹護城河與迎曦門踩街遊行。如果你有空，歡迎來到站前廣場欣賞我們的短劇，和我們一起唱聖誕歌。

Time for the Drama Game! 玩戲劇遊戲囉！

At this Creativity and Dream Workshop, I had the chance to hear the kids talk about their dreams in life: to be a photographer, an actor, a nurse, a special education teacher, a fashion designer, a painter, the list goes on … I have to say, there is nothing more exciting to see the kids being excited about their dreams, other than to empower them to believe in how marvelous and special they truly are and there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that can stop them from pursuing and realizing their visions in life!

在這次創意夢想營中，我有機會聽孩子們分享他們的人生夢想：成為一名攝影師，當演員，當護士，做特教老師，做服裝設計師，當畫家，等等… 我要說，沒有比看見孩子對自己人生感到興奮而令人更興奮的事了，也許同樣興奮的是：能夠加給孩子力量，使他們真正相信自己是多麼奇妙而特別，而且沒有任何、絕對沒有任何事物能夠攔阻他們去追求並實現人生夢想！

The kids, especially the kids in the education system in Taiwan, need someone to tell them: they go to school not just to get good grades or a diploma; the purpose for their receiving education is so they can be equipped to fulfill their destinies in life! And they don’t need to wait till they grow up to see their dreams come true. They can start now with their small dreams or big dreams … They can even change the world NOW as a kid!! Just like Zack Hunter, the 12 year old who started “Loose Change to Loosen Chains” movement to end slavery. He was shy and introverted when first started, but three years later he has spoken to millions, became an author of three books and is mobilizing a whole new generation to dedicate themselves to solving the problems of our world!

孩子，特別是在台灣教育體制下成長的的孩子，需要有人點醒他們：上學不是為了得到高分或獲得一張文憑，受教育的目的是為了要得到訓練，使自己日後能完成人生的使命！而且他們不需要等到長大才能實現夢想，他們現在就可以著手進行他們的大夢小夢 … 他們甚至此刻就可以改變世界！就像韓哲克，十二歲的時候開始推動「零錢，零捆鎖」的運動來對抗人口販賣與現代的奴隸問題。原本害羞內向的他，三年後已向上成千上萬人演講過，著有三本書，並且正號召全球新一代的青年人獻身於解決世界的問題！

I love Christmas and I love the fact my name is Noel. It has given me many many opportunities throughout the years to ponder upon the meaning of Christmas. I have finally come to understand that Christmas really means LIFE-GIVING. To celebrate Christmas, means to BE FULLY ALIVE yourself, and to be able to GIVE LIFE to someone else. I have also come to understand that the core of BEING ALIVE is to be able to dream, no matter how young or old you are, then… the best gift we can give a person is no other than to empower him or her to dream, and to dream big. Wonder Mill has been truly blessed to be able to use the Creativity and Dream workshops to give away such gifts: to call forth the deep passion, stir up unique gifting, and pass on the faith, perseverance and joy needed to live out what our Creator has designed us to be!!! Therefore please allow me to celebrate the dreams and creativity that are already blossoming in you in this life-giving Christmas season. Release it and let it outflow like a mighty river! May your dreams dance with more vibrant colors and your creativity soar to a new height in the great year of 2012!

我愛聖誕節，也愛我的名字NOEL（法文的聖誕節）。這名字使我多年來常常有機會思考聖誕節的意義。我終於明白，聖誕節真正的意義就是「把生命給出去」。慶賀聖誕節，也就是要讓自己完全活過來，然後能夠把自己的生命分給人。我也開始明白，「完全活著」的核心就是「具有夢想的能力」，不管我們的年紀大小。因此，我們可以送給一個人最佳的禮物，就是給他力量，讓他可以去夢想，而且是做偉大的夢想！奇蹟磨坊的確享有獨特的恩寵，就是可以透過各樣創意夢想營來分賜這樣生命的禮物：喚醒人們深沈的熱情，啟動獨特的恩賜，並傳遞那份信心、堅忍和喜樂，使我們可以活出創造主計畫我們成為的生命！因此我要在這賜與生命的聖誕節慶賀在您生命中已經茁長開花的夢想與創意。釋放它如巨流奔騰湧流吧！祝福您在2012年夢想以更為繽紛絢爛的色彩舞蹈，創意飛躍向更高的視界！

Noel Yang, aka Jubilee Girl

導演，編劇，插畫作家，講員，牧師。台大外文系畢業，美國南加州大學電影製作藝術碩士。旅居洛杉磯多年從事紀錄片，劇情短片，廣告片，兒童電視劇等製作。紀錄片《天使之國》獲金穗獎；劇情短片《未曾期待的愛》獲參金馬獎觀摩展；著有中英對照勵志繪本《打開奇蹟的一扇窗》。

目前成立奇蹟磨坊，創作餵飽心靈的視覺故事，培養新一代復興創藝工作者，並推動創新思維，藝術與遊戲治療。

Noel is a director, writer, illustrator, speaker, and pastor. For years she lived in Los Angeles making dramatic shorts, TV commercials and children’s television. Her documentary Land of Angels received Taiwan’s Golden Grain Award, and her dramatic short Unexpected Love was invited to the Golden Horse Film Festival. She is the author of an illustrated inspirational The Wonder Journal. She has a B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literature from the National Taiwan University, and an M.F.A. in Cinema-TV Production from the University of Southern California.

Recently she founded the Wonder Mill to create visual stories that feed the soul, to raise up a new generation of revival artists, and to promote creative-solutioning and healing through arts and play.

For all the excitement and adventures the island can offer, it won’t do if her daddy is not around …

Today I am writing to you from my Secret Island!

It’s been a while since I wrote you. So many exciting things have happened at the Wonder Mill in the past two months: the principal illustration of Wonder Bean was done and is in the hands of my wonderful editors now; Creativity gatherings have been held in Taipei and Hsinchu and we are seeing sparkles of creative flames bursting among us; a feature film idea about horses, kids and restored dreams flew into my mind during an evening traffic jam and now it is in development; and the new Wonder Mill 2012 calendar has whistled its theme song … hop on your creative vehicle and start your flight of a dream year! Yes, it’s a collection of “alien flying vessels” I have done and you will love it!  

今天我是從我的秘密島嶼寫信給大家的。

距上次寫信給您已有一段時間了。最近在奇蹟磨坊真的有許多令人興奮的事情發生。包括: 繪本《奇蹟豆》的插畫已完成，已在出版社編輯手中；在台北和新竹的創意聚會中，我們已看見創意的火花開始燃燒；一晚枯坐在大塞車的結果是，我有了一個關於馬、孩童與夢想新生的電影構想，已開始開發這個企劃；還有2012年的奇蹟磨坊月曆也吹出它的主題曲囉：跳上創意飛行器，展開夢想飛航年。是的，這本月曆會集結了我手繪的各式有趣古怪的飛行器，敬請期待!

But the biggest news here is, I just joined Huhu Studios team … (the 2^nd largest 3D animation studios in New Zealand with 100 million viewers worldwide) to develop and build a new R & D center and film studios in Kaohsiung, Taiwan … Talking about visionary planning… well, for sure it will be a brand new platform of digital media and cultural innovation for talents and younger generations in the Asia-Pacific region in the coming days! As a nature lover, I can’t but fall in love with the name Huhu. It’s actually the name of the largest beetle in NZ. Years ago, one huhu got attracted to the light in Trevor and Jan’s house and attacked the glass window … and Huhu Studios was born. Well, I will certainly share with you more legends surrounding Huhu in the future.

不過最大的消息是，我剛剛加入了 Huhu Studios 團隊，開始參與將在台灣高雄所要成立的3D動畫研發中心與製片廠的計畫。Huhu是紐西蘭第二大3D動畫公司，在全球有一億人的觀眾群。Huhu 台灣分公司有一個前瞻的雄心，就是要在高雄為未來亞太地區新一代的人才打造一個全新的數位影像和文化創意的平台。有趣的是，Huhu是紐西蘭最大的一種甲蟲的名子。多年前一個夜晚，一隻Huhu被Trevor和他太太Jan房子裏的燈光所吸引，一頭撞上了玻璃窗… Huhu Studios 就這樣誕生了。關於Huhu還有許多有趣的傳奇，希望以後再一一和大家分享。

I certainly feel like a student starting a new school season. I have seen that for four years now: when September/October arrives, God will take me to “a new school” to learn new things; not surprisingly, for it is the Feast of Trumpets and Tabernacle season in the Jewish calendar, a time of awakening, refreshment and breakthrough.

我真的覺得自己好像學生，又到了新學期開課的時候。這樣的循環我已經經歷了四年：彷彿每年到了九、十月份，上帝就會帶我去一間「新的學校」去學新的東西。想來其實也不奇怪，因為根據猶太曆法，這正是吹角節和住棚節的時季，也就是覺醒、復甦，和突破的時刻!

Indeed God is awakening, activating, restoring our dreams, and adding fire to our existing missions that will fulfill our destinies. Many of Wonder Mill’s friends have crossed their personal thresholds entering this season. For example, a mother with younger kids will be teaching Chinese to foreigners through university venue; another mother started teaching character building and relationship through Champions’ volunteer programs at grade/junior schools. A high-tech engineer friend is launching his cloud-computing internet service venture. Yet another young lady is picking up brushes to paint… and is learning God’s voice through her creative quest. I want to cheer you on because I know each step you have taken is an obedient response to God’s stirring up in the depth of your soul and I know without doubt that it has huge significance in walking out your unique calling and fulfillment.

的確上帝真的在喚醒、啟動、修復我們的夢想，並且為我們現有的使命添火加油，好讓我們完成我們的人生命定。奇蹟磨坊的許多朋友都在這時節跨越了個人的門檻。比如，一位有幾個寶貝的年輕媽媽剛剛開始要在大學平台向外國人教授華語，另一位母親開始透過得勝者的志工平台進入學校作品格與兩性教育。另一位從事高科技的友人開始雲端網路服務的創業之舉，還有一位年輕女孩拿起畫筆，透過創意之旅聆聽上帝對她要說的話。我衷心為你們喝采，因為我確知你們所踏出的每一步，都是對於上帝在你們心中所激起的感動，所作的忠心的回應，而且必定會成為你們活出呼召與滿足的過程中重要的ㄧ步。

So you may be wondering now … what is this Secret Island I mentioned earlier? Well, as my schedule gets fuller and tasks get harder, I find out I simply need to spend more time … not planning, not working, but … dreaming… dreaming with Holy Spirit in my secret place. During one of these secret place episodes, I found myself talk to Holy Spirit about my “ultimate dream”… to live in a hidden quiet island in the South Pacific ocean … yes, just like the girl Nim in the adventure fantasy film Nim’s Island. I am unabashedly envious of Nim’s life: she has so many cute LIVE lizards as her companions (vs. my dinosaur stuffed toys); she lives in a dual high-tech and primitive hut (talking about eco-friendly); her adventures include scouting the volcano activities, eating worm meals and chasing away uninvited tourists.

不過你可能要問…我前面提到的秘密島嶼究竟是怎麼一回事?其實是，當行程越滿，工作越有挑戰性，我發現我越需要的，不是更多計劃…不是更多苦工…而是…更多作夢…在我的秘密基地與聖靈一同作夢。而在我一次「發夢」的經驗中，我發現我和聖靈提起我的「終極夢想」…就是到南太平洋不為人知的某個小島去作島主，好像冒險奇幻片《尼魔島》中的小女孩妮妮一樣。我極端艷羨妮妮的生活：她有許多隻可愛又活生生的蜥蜴作玩伴(我嗎，有的是恐龍的絨毛玩具)；她住在一幢高科技又原始的類茅屋中(真是保護生態的終極選擇)；她每日的冒險行動包括探勘火山的噴發狀況、吃蠕蟲飯，還有趕走那些不請自來的觀光客。 

But the grandest part of her life is, she is living with her awesome, brilliant, ingenious, and fearless ocean biologist dad. (She lost her oceanographer mother to a swallowing whale.) He teaches her everything about life and ocean and takes her to many ocean excursions. For all the excitement and adventures the island can offer, it won’t do if her daddy is not around … to protect her, shelter her, provide for her, guide her and play with her. Because of daddy’s love, Nim can enjoy the freedom to explore and to grow.

不過她生活中最棒的一部分，是她有位超級聰明能幹又勇敢的海洋生物學家老爸。(她母親，一位海洋攝影師，被鯨魚給吞掉了。)他教導妮妮關於生命，關於海洋，也帶她去海上冒險。雖然妮妮的小島生活充滿各樣冒險刺激，但是如果沒有老爸在一旁，來保護她、庇蔭她、供應她、引導她，一切都失了味。因為有老爸的愛，妮妮才能自由地成長和探索。

Often when I talked to Holy Spirit about this secret wish, I would be tearing… so much so that I started to question why. And then it dawned on me … my South-Pacific-secret-island fantasy is speaking to me not about lizards nor worm meals nor volcano exploration, but about my deepest yearning … to BE … my Heavenly Father’s girl. The ACHE in me for the hidden island is not for a recluse lifestyle, a holiday getaway or a wild frontier expedition, but for my Heavenly Father’s presence.

常常當我和聖靈提及這秘密願望的時候，我就會開始落淚…幾次後，我開始問神，為什麼?終於我搞清楚了…原來我這個有關南平洋秘密島嶼的夢想，不是關乎蜥蜴、蠕蟲飯或火山探勘，而是關乎我最深的渴望…就是…作…我天父爸爸的女兒。讓我會對秘密島嶼有心痛渴望的原因，不是因為我需要一種隱居式的生活、假期的轉換空間，或體驗一下蠻荒拓墾的風味，而是我對天父阿爸同在的深深需要。

It is a longing to cuddle around my Heavenly Father, to play on the sand beaches He has created for me, to know I am safe … whether I am exploring this unknown forest or investigating that mystery cove. It is a CALL to go back to Eden, to sit in the cool, to eat from the tree of life, and to … just hang out with Him, the Ultimate Father.

這是一種渴望，渴望倚偎在天父阿爸身旁、在祂所預備的沙灘上玩耍的渴望。知道不論我是在此座未知森林中探險，還是在彼座神秘洞穴中勘測，我都是全然安穩的。這是一個招換我回到伊甸園…坐在涼風中…吃生命樹的果子…單單享受祂—

我終極的阿爸—

的呼召。

I have always loved what Newton said about himself and about his scientific studies:  “To myself I am only a child playing on the beach, while vast oceans of truth lie undiscovered before me.” Sir Isaac Newton, being inspired by God in all his researches, acknowledged he was only a child playing on the beach of truth God has created for him. But look at what toys God picked out for him to toil with: the incandescent shells of history-shaking discoveries and understanding of the universe. I have loved this statement also because it has linked me to my earthly father in a unique way: it is one of his favorite quotes he shared often with his university students when he was still alive.

I also realized I don’t need to wait for my dream to become true in the future. I can come to my Secret Island, Now. So here I come, full of a child’s anticipation and devotion, to the golden beach on my secret island, in my dreamtime with the Father. I can come as often as I want, at any time I wish. He is always here to talk with me… to play with me…. Together we can build a sand castle, blow a giant shell, sing a marine tune, do a summersault, and laugh until our hearts explode!

Her documentary Land of Angels received Taiwan’s Golden Grain Award, and her dramatic short Unexpected Love was invited to the Golden Horse Film Festival. She is the author of an illustrated inspirational The Wonder Journal. She has a B.A. in Foreign Languages and Literature from the National Taiwan University, and an M.F.A. in Cinema-TV Production from the University of Southern California.

Recently she founded the Wonder Mill to create visual stories that feed the soul, to raise up a new generation of revival artists, and to promote healing through arts and play.

Intel recruits sci-fi writers to dream up future tech

Chip maker Intel has commissioned leading science fiction authors to pen short stories that imagine future uses for the firm’s technology.

The collection, called “The Tomorrow Project”, aims to capture the public’s imagination regarding the company’s current research.

Intel believes this can help anticipate consumer aspirations, and drive future adoption of its products.

The anthology has been made available online as a free download.

The Tomorrow Project is led by Intel futurist Brian David Johnson, who regards the scheme as an important way to assess future technology trends.

“When we design chips to go into your television, your computers, your phones – we need to do it about five or ten years in advance. We need to have an understanding of what people will want to do with those devices,” said Mr Johnson.

“What science fiction does is give us a way to think about the implications of the technologies that we’re building, for the people who will actually be using them.”

The concept is called “future casting” – and aims to drive future technology uses, rather than simply responding to market forces.

“If we can give people a vision of the future – and do it through science fiction – we can capture people’s imaginations,” said Mr Johnson.

The project features work from UK sci-fi author Ray Hammond, who took research in development at Intel’s labs and used it as the basis for “The Mercy Dash” – the story of a couple battling futuristic traffic technology in a race to save a mother’s life.

“I was more nervous approaching this than I have been with any of my full-length novels. I’ve never written short stories, so the form was new to me,” Mr Hammond told BBC News.

The author’s work has been made freely available for download from Intel’s site and Mr Hammond has been delighted by the reaction.

“I’ve had several hundred responses from people around the world who’ve read the story, and either want to read more of my books, or else ask specific questions on the content.”

The initiative suggests a cultural shift by the chip giant, which has had to adjust to sharp changes in the consumer tech landscape.

In previous decades, Intel was able to drive progress and profits through steady increments in processor speed. Yet in a post-PC world, firms like Apple have successfully used lifestyle innovations to frame future market appetites.

“Intel have owned the desktop and server market for a long time. As the world moves to mobile devices where they are not number one, what are they going to do?” said Mr Hammond.

The author believes narrative has an important role to play in future technology.

“Story telling is often under-appreciated in marketing and development. It can engender reactions you just don’t get if you show a bunch of slides. The best CEOs – like Apple’s Steve Jobs – are the most brilliant story tellers,” said Mr Hammond.

在這智慧型手機、平板電腦突起的時代，安謀(ARM)和高通（Qualcomm）針對行動裝置的需求，以低耗能、體積小的晶片搶下了這塊市場大餅，而英特爾只能在一旁垂涎。為此，英特爾必須馬上做出改變，而這就是明日計畫的目的。

據《彭博商業週刊》的報導，英特爾為趕上市場趨勢，他們試圖尋找改變自身企業文化的最佳管道，他們的答案就是這些科幻作家，英特爾讓這些作家研究他們最新的研究項目，並以此做為小說的創作題材，描述未來這些高科技能做到什麼，而這將成為英特爾的重要指標。

你或許會質疑這些科幻小說的效果，但對這些工程師來說，這些科幻文學才是他們的語言，其中一位英特爾的工程師便說，「對我們這些從小看星艦迷航記的小孩，這是非常有效的方式。」所以英特爾要藉著科幻作家的筆，描繪出未來可能的市場趨勢，這讓工程師能夠設計出更符合需求的晶片。

這個科幻出版部門隸屬於英特爾的社會科學部，此部門已成立12年，為的是要了解現代社會是如何運用科技。英特爾的技術策略總監麥奎格(McGregor)說到，「使用者不再重視技術發達與否，他們只在乎能如何使用這些科技。」

明日計畫的科幻小說都會在網路上出版，且計畫公開徵稿，若是有興趣的作家、藝術家等，都能以各種創作提供英特爾。所以有興趣的人可以搜尋明日計畫的各種創作，或許未來這些的內容會成為英特爾的產品，甚至預測未來的科技走向。
